The Care and Feeding of Residential HVAC

Residential hvac is the installation and maintenance of home furnaces, water heaters, and home cooling systems. Customers can usually use the same contractor for both heating and cooling. These companies are trained and experienced at furnace repair, water heater problems, and any repairs that need to be performed within a home’s heating system. Throughout the winter in any location where the weather gets cold, residential hvac companies say that 75% of the calls they get complaining about the loss of heat is due to lack of maintenance on the furnace. Installation of the furnace or boiler is not where its upkeep ends. These units need preventive maintenance and cleaning throughout their years of use in order to keep them working at top efficiency.

Air conditioning in the home has become almost a given for many families today. However, it has only become more widely used in recent years. Willis Carrier invented the first air conditioner in 1902. Working for a publishing company, he needed something to help prevent his ink from running and devised a system that would cool the air enough to dry the ink, as well as prevent his paper from expanding. In the 1940′s people could by window units, but they were very expensive, priced at $350.00, which would be equivalent to $3,500.00 today. Because the price was so high, most people couldn’t afford to have air conditioning in their homes. Even by 1993, 50 years later, still only 68% of homes in the U.S. were equipped with air conditioners. Residential hvac has only become more widely available during the last 25 or so years.

Statistics show that in the average home 48% of the energy bill is a result of the heating and cooling of the home. Heating the home is an absolute necessity throughout the cold months, and, in some homes, cooling is even a necessity throughout the summer, possibly due to a family member’s health or a situation that warrants a specific year round temperature in the home. It is simply of fact of life that a large chunk of a homeowner’s energy bill will be related to heating and/or cooling usage.

Residential hvac experts are usually available 24/7. In any town or city, there is always a local 24 hour emergency service available for any unexpected problems that shut down a heating or air conditioning system. In addition, most of these companies will offer a service contract to their customers which will include cleaning of the unit and a filter replacement. Service contracts will normally cost between $70 and $100 and normally are good for one year. In the case of a unit breakdown or if repairs are needed, an hvac contractor will inspect the unit and give the customer an estimate of the cost and the time that will be necessary to take for repairs. They will explain what will be involved in the work and how the job will be carried out. It is their job to provide prompt, friendly service with the least amount of inconvenience to the customer while they repair the unit, as well as offering the service for the most reasonable cost.

Very often a residential hvac contractor will provide a written guarantee for clients stating that should anything go wrong with the unit or units they install or repair in the home within a specified length of time, the company will provide a new unit or repair the old one at little or no cost. This guarantee provides a feeling of security for the customer in the choice they made by hiring that particular contractor. By making this promise the company shows that they are willing to be accountable for any errors or problems that may occur, and they are committed to the satisfaction of their customers.
